CASE
HISTORY / CLINIC:
Patient who has had sore throat particularly on the right side for
one week. No eating nor drinking for 2 days. Severe trismus for
one day now. Opening of the mouth is no longer possible. Elevated temperatures
for 5 days. Chilling to some extent.
FINDINGS:
The right tonsillar region appears prominently
swollen and hyperintense in the contrast-enhanced T1 image of the oral cavity. Regions
of low signal can be seen within the mass, typical of necrotic processes.
The mass extends into the soft
tissues of the neck and into the floor
of the mouth.
DIAGNOSIS:
Peritonsillar abscess
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:
tumorous tonsillar mass.
