ANAMNESIS
/ SYMPTOMS:
A 36 year old patient shows recurrent postprandial occuring swellings in the
region of the left submandibular gland.
FINDINGS:
Starting
from the submandibular
gland and
reaching through the whole floor
of the mouth and up to the chin a hypoechoic
band is
visible that shows no blood flow on the colour encoded Dopplerīs sonogramm. The
submandibular gland, the mylohyoid
muscle and the tongue are
clearly visualized.
DIAGNOSIS:
The
patient is suspected of suffering from a stenosis
of or a small concrement in the Wharton´s duct. Stones that are
located very far distally can be diagnosed on a sonogramm only by indirect
signs such as a stasis of saliva in the duct. In most of the cases the stones
then are visible in the area of the ductīs ostium at clinical inspection
like it was in the case of this patient.
