HISTORY / CLINIC:
34-year-old victim of a car accident
FINDINGS:
Evidence
of rib
fracture on both sides as seen at this cross-sectional level. Densities similar
to air under
the skin (subcutaneous air), in the mediastinum and
in pleural
cavity are apparent on the left side. Evidence of left dorsal homogeneous
fluid of density
similar to blood.
Tubular
structures on the left..
DIAGNOSIS:
Polytraumatized patient with rib
fractures, subcutaneous
emphysema, mediastinal
emphysema, pneumothorax on
the ventral left side. Bloody
pleural effusion on both sides. Closed
pleural drainage (Bülau's method) on the left.
