1.) Which browser and screen resolution should be used?
This program runs best with Microsoft Internet Explorer (Version 4.0 or higher) and a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels. Although HNORAD can also be viewed using Netscape web browser, we guarantee best functioning only with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

2.) How do i navigate through the program?

The front page is the main access to all the indices and pages of the program. It is divided into HNO-Radiologie and HNO Sonographie. HNO-Radiologie offers case studies and entities clarified using projection radiography, MRT and CT. HNO-Sonographie contains the cases and entities clarified by means of sonography. Within these two categories it is possible to activate the indices shown at the top. Besides the arrows with which the user can move forth and back between the pages in both indices, the entity oriented index has two pull-down menus. In this way the user can access the desired region and entity without having to go back to the first page. The case oriented index doesn't have a similar pull-down menu which shows the corresponding clinical picture aus Gründen möglicher Einflussnahme.

3.) Why are there two indices through which the user can access the various cases?

Individual cases can be accessed using the case oriented index, which similar to daily clinical routine, contains clinical details such as case history, lab results, findings of physical examinations, preliminary check-up. – This index is most suitable for clinicians and radiologists on further studies or specialization and for lectures that are predominantly clinically-radiologically oriented.
In the entity oriented index the user is given a speicific topic (e.g the petrous bone) to work with. This makes this index suitable for use in conventional lectures.
The basic structure of the indices is basically arranged according to anatomic aspects.

4.) Can the pictures be enlarged?

Clicking on a picture opens up a pop-up window with an enlargement of the picture.

5.) Why is the clinical information so brief?

The clinical information offered the radiologist in his every day duty are usually brief. Therefore the details given here are similar to those a radiologist has to work with in his clinical routine.

6.) Which target group was the program designed for?
Our aim was to satisfy the high demands of the users of medical teaching software in terms of multifunctionality, interactivity and multidisciplinarity. As concerns multifunctionality we decided to create two access paths (indices) which allow both the clinician and the diagnostician individual access to the program for self-studies or for teaching. For interactivity attempts were made to allow for optional display of additional information as well as graphical highlighting of findings. Unlike in using a text book, the excitement is maintained when openning the the web pages and the user has to for example recognise the abnormality in the images by himself. On the other hand a corrective view is offered by the optional highlight feature. Users really appreciate this kind of interactive way of learning.
Besides conforming with further education and specialization in ear, nose and throat medicine our main aim was to satisfy the requirements of the new licensing law for medical doctors, which became effective in the winter semester of 2003/2004.
The ninth amendment of the licencing law for doctors states the standards concerning multidisciplinarity, cost effectiveness, the use of new teaching and learning methods in medicine and continuous evaluation in the medical course of studies.
Because we could design an interdisciplinary program using existing resources (the internet for example) we could consider these requirements fulfilled. The intergrated quiz satisfies the requisite for the possibility of evaluation.
Students and collegues furthering their education really appreciate the possibility of online training at no charge and indepence of time and location. They simply need an internet access. Considering the cost of further training courses and and the cost of acquiring specialist literature, the financial advantage of online programs is really immense.
The HNORAD program on the other hand can not in any way replace a committed lecturer and his rhetorical lectures nor can it replace specialist literature that has been compiled over decades. Auch der teilweise über Jahrzehnte gewachsener Fachliteratur soll keinesfalls die Existenzberechtigung abgesprochen werden. On the contrary we refer to the multifunctionality, interactivity and easy update of digital media and thus of HNORAD as well, as excellent supplement to specialist literature.

7.) Is it possible to access particular cases by alphabetic search?

Using the menu item Glossary it is possible to perform an alphabetic search of the desired diagnoses.

8.) What is the use of the evaluation index?

The evaluation index helps the user or a third party assess the user's diagnostic abilities. This index is intended to be self-critical.It can also be used to monitor others' learning objective and thus gain an idea of the successes and weaknesses of the teaching content.
Each user signs on using a user name and pass word chosen by himself. The questions and clinical cases will then be posed in a random manner. Correctly answered questions will be registered in percantages in a data bank created for the particular user. When the user logs on at a later date with the same user name and password he'll be offered the possibility of viewing the long-term assessment of his professional expertise.
